They were happy ladies and powerful ladies and beautiful, lovely, glorious ladies, but they were all solitary. As a prompt to her subconscious she was planning to add some images of couples to her collection. During that weekend, she acquired a piece from a mutual artist friend called 'The Suitors'. The piece featured three handsome gents all offering up platters of cake to a woman who stood above.

Weeks later, a friend of Genna's was coming to visit. I thought, 'Hmm. Cute single boy.' I called up my friend and invited her to join us all for the weekend. They hit it off. The only problem was that she had already begun a nice flirtation with another friend-of-a-friend and was feeling a little conflicted. Days later we were dissecting the situation over the phone when I yelled 'ROCHELLE!' (that's not really her name, but you get the idea.) 'ROCHELLE! I wonder when you're going to hear from your third suitor?!' She laughed it off with a 'God forbid!' but the next morning I got the text: "Well, the third suitor has arrived, WTH?!' She had received a ping from an excellent prospect on match.com. I won't tell you the end of the story in case you know us and you've figured out who 'Rochelle' is, but we'll just say she made her choice and things are shaping up quite nicely.

This story did not surprise me. Collecting and living with art is a powerful practice. It's like a super powered version of a vision board. With a vision board, we're taking a moment to tape tasty visions to a poster board that will receive random glances in our home office or inside a closet door...with our art collections we're hunting out objects into which artists have poured hours and days of their own loving energy, making carefully discerned choices between them, and committing real money and space to items we will spotlight in our choicest spots and gaze upon for years. The art we live with can't help but influence our minds and hearts.

We recently received an email from a client who was interested in our painting "The Way Back". The entire message was lovely and thought provoking but one particular line stood out to me. It said "The saudade of your work is palpable and intoxicating." This stood out mostly because not only did I have no idea what it meant but I had never even seen that word before. Google defines it as:

'a Portuguese and Galician word that has no direct translation in English. It describes a deep emotional state of nostalgic or profound melancholic longing for an absent something or someone that one loves.

Saudade was once described as "the love that remains" after someone is gone. Saudade is the recollection of feelings, experiences, places or events that once brought excitement, pleasure, well-being, which now triggers the senses and makes one live again.'

Wow. While this is a shade darker than we generally intend, it is a mood that we've always reached for. The definition goes on to describe a feeling that is 'happy and sad at once', missing that which is gone but joyous that it was experienced at all.

Bless you, emailer, for adding to my vocabulary and giving me a deeper sense of what our work means.

I debate often, with others and with myself, the benefits
and detriments of artist self representation vs. gallery or dealer
representation. While Genna and I do
both, the plusses of self representation far outweigh the detriments in our
personal equation. No one is more
motivated to represent us than us. Not having a middle man between us and our
collectors helps us keep our prices at a reasonable level. Travel.
The glamour of sweaty, windy, panicky booth assembly. Oh, sorry, that goes on the other side of the
equation. But the biggest benefit by far
is the constant feedback we receive from viewers as we sit for hours, looking
at our paintings, hearing what they have to say, and discussing the work. I
believe I have learned as much about our work from others as I have from
actually participating in making it.

man recently in The Woodlands, TX. He
was of an age that I now consider ‘a kid’…probably somewhere in his early
twenties…and was intensely chatty. He
was poking me mercilessly to reveal more and more about what our work means,
what our motivations are, what are the themes, why is this this color, why is
that painted like that. He was very
sweet and I was doing my best to answer his questions but was struggling as
most of what he was asking had no verbal answer. Finally I said something to the effect
of “painting is a visual media. If I
could communicate everything I wanted to communicate in words, I’d be a
writer.” I promise I didn’t mean this in
a smart ass way. It’s just true. And more than not having a clear answer in my
own mind to many of his questions, I felt that to manufacture answers would
minimize the work, make it about one thing when thing when truly it’s about
everything and/or anything I think this is why you’ll often
find artists much more interested in discussing their medium and physical
processes than their themes. I can talk
all day about how Genna and I make our work but tend to gloss over the ‘why’
with broad strokes…family, community, nostalgia, the quality of memory, the
beauty of the everyday.

I wound up having a really great conversation with that kid
about art in general and the contrast between visual and verbal art that had me
charged up for the rest of the day. Like
I said, perks of the business. Then last
week I was reading Malcolm Gladwell’s ‘Blink’ which is about the power of and
mechanism behind snap decisions. Around
page 119 there’s this:

Let me give you a very simple example. Picture, in your mind, the face of the waiter
who served you the last time you ate at a restaurant, or the person who sat
next to you on the bus today. Any
stranger whom you’ve seen recently will do.
Now, if I were to ask you to pick that person out of a police lineup,
could you do it? I suspect you could.
Recognizing someone’s face is a classic example of unconscious
cognition. We don’t have to think about
it. Faces just pop into our minds. But suppose I were to ask you to take a pen
and paper and write down in as much detail as you can what your person looks like. Describe her face. What color was her hair? What was she wearing? Was she wearing any
jewelry? Believe it or not, you will NOW DO A LOT WORSE AT PICKING THAT FACE
OUT OF A LINEUP. THIS IS BECAUSE THE ACT
OF DESCRIBING A FACE HAS THE EFFECT OF IMAIRING YOUR OTHERWISE EFFORTLESS
ABILITY TO SUBSEQUESNTLY RECOGNIZE THAT FACE.

The
psychologist Jonathan W. Schooler, who pioneered research on this effect, calls
it VERBAL OVERSHADOWING. Your brain has
a part (the left hemisphere) that thinks in words, and a part (the right
hemisphere) that thinks in pictures, and what happened when you described the
face in words was that your actual visual memory WAS DISPLACED. Your thinking was bumped from the right to
the left hemisphere. When you were faced
with the lineup the second time around, what you were drawing on was your
memory of what you said the waitress looked like, not your memory of what you
saw she looked like.”

(I apologize for the shouting…the caps were mine, not Mr.
Gladwell’s). SO…aha. We all have a visual, instinctive, magical
place in our minds that is not only not enhanced by a verbal overlay of an
experience but actually subverted by it.

Does this mean we shouldn’t talk about art? Absolutely not. We should all be pleased to share our experiences
of art. This interaction enriches the
art exponentially. What we should not
do, however, is ask artists to give to us in words what they have already given
us whole heartedly, freely in paint, clay, song, pixels, metal, wool, troll
doll assemblage, photography, peep collage…

Genna and I are THRILLED to have been chosen as the featured artists for the Bayou City Memorial Park Art Festival in Houston next month. This is one of our favorite festivals in one of our favorite cities. They selected our 'Spin' and 'Pendleton Pegasus' for use on the billboards and commemorative posters for the show.

Here's a sweet little piece that they wrote for their February, Valentine's Day themed newsletter:

Signe and Genna Grushovenko have a lifestyle where collaboration is key. Partners in both art and life, the married featured artists have been creating art together for nearly ten years.

"I think the things that make our marriage successful are the same things that make our collaboration successful," said Signe. "Genna and I are different in many ways but those differences complement one another."

After viewing any of the Grushovenko work, it's apparent that these differences influence their artwork and help to make it even more unique. While creating a piece, Genna begins the process with tonal underpaintings of acrylic and oil pigments. After his work dries, Signe takes over and uses vintage photos as references for oil pastel drawings and then finishes the work with painting in oil.

"In our work, Genna lays down the rich, spontaneous foundation and I tame that wildness with my figures," said Signe. "The results are both paintings and a lifestyle that neither of us could have created on our own."

Together the artists find harmony in both art and their relationship. Genna says the couple's marriage is the foundation from which their artwork grows. Because of this they are able to dodge the battle of egos that could come from two artists working together on one piece.

"No matter who is the star in a particular piece, in the end 100% of the praise and the profits all come home," Genna said.

The fact that the Grushovenko's art is created with love and collaboration makes it even more special. Though each layer is unique to Signe or Genna, the final product is a beautiful, harmonious piece, much like their relationship.

Genna and I are looking to expand our collection of images from the 50's, 60's and 70's and hope you can help. Are there photos in your family albums that would make a great Grushovenko? If so, please go to our artist page on facebook and post them there. If you're going to post, please read to the end! If we choose one of your images to make a painting, we will:

1. Send you something. I'm not sure what it is yet. At the very least you'll receive a box of notecards featuring one of our paintings. What we may do is make a limited number of cards from each piece chosen, in which case you'll get those :)

2. Give you right of first refussal on the painting made from your photo. There is absolutely no pressure to buy your piece, but we won't let anyone else have it if you want it.

3. Make a book from the images and give you one. Every piece created from a submitted photo will be professionally photographed and put together in a catalog to be produced and distributed to all participants next winter.

4. Say thank you from the bottom of our hearts. We've done variations on this idea twice before and several 'all stars' from our image collection came from there...including the 'Boy Line, Bike Tangle' image entered by Ralph & Nita Howard and the 'Soft Bather' entered by Susie Brown, both from the LaGrange GA show.
Our budding experiments with capturing movement have blossomed! The '28 day dance party' launches tonight at Art & Light gallery, 4 Aberdeen Drive, Greenville SC from 6pm-9pm. Come join us for some moving and shaking in the New Year!

Big thanks are in order to A&L gallerist Teresa Roche who envisioned this series and gently prodded us into tackling it for the last year or so. Teresa is a boudless source of energy and enthusiam and I hope we have captured even a fraction of her energy in this show.

The exhibition opened for sales this morning at 9am. This series is available exclusively through Art & Light through the month of January. To see the series and for purchasing info, visit our website at www.grushovenko.com.

For ages, we've been working from vintage photos. This body of work began around 1996 with a few paintings I made of my great-grandparents. One of the first was of my great-great-grandfather Alfonso and his wife Madora. The style was nearly unrecognizable from where we are today...heavy paint, plenty face, and details of the photo's frame included in the painting. The reference image was probably from the early 1900's. I liked the contrast of the contemporary style with the traditional imagery and began to mine that vein deeper and deeper.

Early pieces in this series came from late 1800's-early 1900's photographs. Genna joined me in the work around 2000 and the vintage of the reference imagery we were drawn to began to move very slowly forward. Working with turn of the century photos, the characters tended to be static, standing tall and creating almost a grid between the figures, the horizon, and the other objects in the scene (architecture, autos, etc).

During the first decade of our colaboration, we proceeded slowly through the first half of the twentieth century. In the last few years, the work has reached into the sixties with brief forrays into the seventies. I even caught myself looking hard at an eighties snapshot the other day (God forbid).

As film became more advanced and cheaper, the characters in these reference images become more and more animated. Family photos morphed from staid portraits to on-the-fly snapshots. My skill set as a painter has shifted incrementally hand in hand with our slow trek into this more active imagery.

So, after ten years of painting upright citizens, I'm suddenly (or maybe not at all suddenly) finding myself drawn more and more to photos of movement. Recently came this:
"Summer-time
greetings friends and collectors! When
artists travel, my hear pitter-patters as I anticipate the all-new and
completely inspired collections of works that follow. Travel has inspired
artists’ creations for centuries, from stunning vistas and landscapes of 19th
century Realist painters to the spectacular photographs of Walker-Evans. Several of Greenville’s finest are spending
quality time on the road this summer as well

Greenville’s
very own JJ Ohlinger found himself completely and totally inspired on a trip
with his wife last year and that trip has resulted in a very exciting project and
a brand new body of work. For JJ, the
New York subway system “hosts one of the most elegant dance performances you
will ever see, and it’s free to anyone who , takes the time to watch.” In JJ’s eye, the hundreds of people who load
and unload, moving quickly in both directions is like watching an “amazing
ballet.” Because he loves introducing
contrasts, with respect to light and dark, in painting, he enjoys the challenge
and reward immensely. Just as in life experiences, JJ explains, “contrasts of life in the City
abound in the subway. At one point you
can be wedged between hundreds of people on the platform and be completely
alone while in the next moment you can be the only individual in sight, yet you
are completely connected with all that is New York City.” But, to JJ the inspiration came when the
trains departed and the halls and walkways were calm. His F Train project features subway
stations in a mode of silence and calm and features amazing tile work, graffiti
and layers of grime earned over years of serving the city. New York is one of my favorite cities on
earth – I am thankful to JJ for reminding me of the subway ballet when NY City
seems so far away.

and Genna Grushovenko, Greenville’s newest art couple is hitting the road this
month as well. The husband and wife painting duo’s next art
tour takes them to DesMoines, Denver and Madison (WI)” When Genna and Signe
travel, they often take a few detours between shows for rest, refueling and inspiration
to boot! Signe comments, “before we make
it back home again. Genna will take time in between the first two shows
to camp and fish in Rocky Mountain National Park with fellow artists.
That’s become one of our favorite parts of the festival lifestyle...connecting
strongly with our ‘tribe’ and taking mini vacations all over the place.”
Last year they spent time in the Arkansas Mountains and on the Texas coast,
neither of which they would ever have done if they hadn’t been cooling their heels
waiting for the next festival. Capturing
blissful moments with family and friends in oil paintings is at the heart of
the Grushovenko’s work. Traveling and
visiting with art friends at summer art festivals is sure to kick start all new
collections – can’t wait to see the results!"

God bless Lesley Frenz...aka 'the artsy forager'...for her thoughtful blog post about our work last week. I think artists are sometimes too close to their own work to properly describe it, and Lesley has probably topped me here in her understanding of our motives and goals. It's truly a thrill to have someone so beautifully describe what we do.

Lesley is also doing a beautiful job forging connections in the art world. I heard from several prospective clients and one gallery shortly after this blog posted. One of the clients, a lovely lady on the west coast who would probably never have known of us otherwise, purchased a small painting. We've been having a nice little email correspondence since, the last installment of which included pictures of our painting amongst it's new neighbors in her collection. The piece hanging directly above ours caught my eye and turned out to be by one of our collectors and new friends Ruth Fiege who will be our booth neighbor at the Cherry Creek Festival in Denver this fall. Small world!
Thank you, thank you, thank you Lesley!
Every family has an unofficial photographer. That one person you can
always count on to be there, camera in hand, to capture milestones,
special gatherings and stolen moments. My maternal grandmother played
the role in my family. She filled album after album of memories to
leave behind and those photographs are among my most treasured
possessions. They are a visual storybook of our family history.

they become instantly relatable. The faces could be you.. your

We always tend to look back on “the good ol’ days” with fondness.
Whether or not the days were really good is debatable, I suppose. But I
think there is much we can learn by looking back on the imagery of our
past. How to be content. Living with less but living more. Enjoying simple moments with family and friends.

Genna and I have been together for 13 years this July, collaborating for over ten, and traveling to festivals for about eight. We both work from home and we spend around four hundred hours a year in a van together. People often ask us jokingly what this is like, as they assume its probably filled with strife and irritation, and I always answer that it's fantastic...89% of the time. The truth is that it's fantastic 98% of the time, but 89% is funnier. 98% sounds both fake and cloyingly sweet.

There was lots of fighting at the very beginning of our travels. It generally revolved around the setting up of our tent/display and my irrational nerves over traveling. Over time, we worked out all of the kinks and got the fighting down to maybe once every three or four shows. We've done our respective 'setting up' jobs so many times now that we barely need to speak to one another. It's like a mime ballet.

A handful of weeks ago, fate conspired to split our team. Running low on work during a 5 week 'tour', we decided I would sit out a show and stay home to paint. Shortly after making that decision, we were invited to the ribbon cutting ceremony for the 2012 HGTV Green Home during the time we were scheduled to be at the Brookside Art Annual in Kansas City. Reluctantly, I agreed to stay back and attend and leave sweet Genna on his own for a second festival.

Secretly, I was delighted. I felt like a child that was getting to stay home from school. No sweaty set up...no sitting around for three days in the heat (or rain, or wind) waiting. Our team splitting experiment is now nearly done and I can say without hesitation that I never want to do it again! I missed the sweaty set up. I missed the sitting around. I missed the dinners and drinks with our artist friend posse. I even missed the riding in the van. To rub salt in the wound, Genna gave himself some little vacations in between shows and visited museums, antique stores, and Elvis's house. Jerk. Mostly, though, I missed Genna. Our everyday mime ballet is hard to do with one person. I think he felt the same. It took him around six hours to break down our booth from the first show.

On the plus side, I attended the Green Home ribbon cutting with my mother and my very best friend, and it was a beautiful, proud moment that I was more than happy to share with them. Serenbe, the site of the Green Home, is a 1000 acre wooded retreat that I would highly recommend checking out if you're anywhere near the Atlanta area. Dinner and breakfast at the Farmhouse were spectacular. We toured the Green Home and took a hundred blurry iphone pictures in front of our painting. All in all a great two days that I won't ever forget.

That said, I'm ready for my man to come home. I'm bored of my own company and ready to resume our 24 hour a day collaboration!Signehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16286126315029653440noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5162976193267963716.post-3854457802895350242012-04-16T16:30:00.005-07:002012-05-27T14:40:11.125-07:00HGTV Green Home Artist 2012
We have more than 60 new paintings available now on the website, including two smaller versions of the "Bike Boys".

This weekend kicks off 5 straight weekends of travel for us...Main Street Ft Worth, Magic City Art Connection in Birmingham, Brookside Art Annual in Kansas City, Artisphere in Greenville SC, and the Northern Virginia Fine Arts Festival in Reston VA. Hoping to see you somewhere along the way!Signehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16286126315029653440noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5162976193267963716.post-46127883380777185042012-02-06T13:48:00.000-08:002012-02-06T19:22:59.263-08:00new year, new ideasBeing a full time painter, its easy to find myself in a rut with imagery, technique, ever-thing. Its a huge blessing that people think enough of what Genna and I do to want to give us money for it, but it's also the tiniest of curses as it keeps me partially confined to the style that we've come to be recognized for.

What I think is great about this 'problem' is that it's allowed (forced) me to sink very deeply into my technique and work it out to a level of consistency and fluidity that I would never have achieved if I could jump from media to media and method to method whenever I felt the urge.

Instead, I achieve change glacially...more fine tuning than broad strokes. Lately, though, there's something brewing. My process for ages has been painting largely in the negative shapes. So, instead of painting trees, I would paint the sky around it, allowing the underpainting layer to stand in for the tree form. Faces are often defined by cutting in the background form to it's edge. So, a few weeks ago I began this piece:

Like this:

Instead of painting the sky shape, I painted the trees. This doesn't seem like a huge deal, but to me it looks and feels totally different...kind of like writing with my left hand. The bottom half of the piece was completed with my usual technique, but the top remained entirely a positive painting with the underpainting representing the sky without any tinkering on my part.

Then I took that idea even a little farther and made this:

The underpainting stands entirely pristine as the sky.

And again here:

Then last week I took the plunge and advanced this idea even further. In this image, I painted only the figures and let Genna's underpainting serve as both the sky and the ground.

While this is an image I've worked with before, this feels like a completely new idea to me. One thing I really like about this piece is that while the figures are all painted in the positive, the negative painting technique still exists within each figure. Like with the ties of this girl's bonnet and the detailing of her ruff:

I have plans for a whole new series based on this concept but have typed enough for now and can't imagine anyone read this far. I'll show it to you once it happens!Signehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16286126315029653440noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5162976193267963716.post-87910665374835255152012-01-14T05:46:00.000-08:002012-01-14T13:47:47.529-08:00an embarrassment of riches

Studio mate Joey brought me a great album of old photos a few months ago that touched off an all out photo buying free-for-all at the Grushovenko household. Over the course of a week or so I 'won' around a dozen ebay auctions for large lots of old pictures. Boxes of hundreds of new images began arriving at our house. For the first few days this was almost unbearably exciting, followed by days of mild excitement, followed by a few days of 'eh', followed by a feeling of mild nausea as if I had eaten too much sugar. I became so overwhelmed by the sheer number of possibilities that I basically had to hide them all from myself and turn back to some tried-and-true references for a while.

It's been long enough now that my image indigestion has abated and I have begun pulling out my new babies and working them into our repertoire. This weekend is our very first 'Greenville Open Studios' weekend. We are incredibly excited to be a part of this fantastic event. Our visit here for the 2010 show was the clincher in our decision to make the move to the upstate. Over 100 artists are opening their studios and homes this weekend for the public to come in and see their work and their process.

Here are a few pictures of our space, featuring 30 new pieces from myself and Genna, new paintings by Steve Frenkel and Melinda Clair, and fabric art by our Nastiya.

<img style="display:block; We're two weeks open at Grushovenko Gallery and I finally got around to taking a few photos. They start from the outside and proceed more or less from the font to the back. Genna built the wall just inside the front door facing out that has the bathing girls painting on it. It's on casters so it can be moved around the room and also provides storage for our extra pieces (Genna is a genius). The last few pics are of our neighbor Joey and his studio. Our spaces connect through the west wall.
Don't tell Genna, he thinks I still have everything in it's proper perspective.

Thursday we moved in furniture. This morning I started bringing in all of what I like to call 'the giblets' (my nonsensical term for accessories). I drug in a full car load of pots, quilts, art books, and rugs and then met with my gallery neighbor Joey Bradley to work out the design for our new signage.

We'll have a vertical 'art gallery' banner hanging above the front door and window vinyl with 'Grushovenko Gallery, fine art and craft' on the window. I picked out this font:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 55px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJWiSlOtzHjJ1r2Vix_A9-0RujgZ4vJACtsQXO8wZo-2QcHISAaVxtqgvfsQfNBeGpMzjWfefW1NbnMeQ0ij9LoFOlZ2llC5BqxF6jVvv0JDWtQLbIUB2Y744tRJZb5uK0v5GBJifN5fk/s320/ocr+a+extended.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5634946701709544962" />

which I thought was really au courant. Joey informed me that OCR A Extended is embarrassingly 2009 and totally gauche (my words, his sentiment). He basically told me that he could not be associated with such a loser, so in the end we settled on the font that Ed Ruscha uses in his paintings:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 317px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilf6TfA1lL4Mwcbd2fa6RiFCHoh6uVglQ67tcr93t-S5GM-Vx8qPqVoKx4ungobwVPJ2DLu1hNGgVMHNDKExaU8Po8p556InILpMRqHqEXmKupibYULOFxwSmc-ygrP_sO0ISRH5NtIA0/s320/ed+ruscha.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5634948202493687298" />

It's called 'tapeworm'

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 308px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiY1aO4QVblVJU1o-Zv4q4tPx_ZTt5L0o8eT0lxq8XFT8koLp52fYm5E8JoE7yHzTMv-zPXNtOOjg0h32NcdtOhnhb6lKTnQbP7kr7yUk0_CW5zSVsYLVmNxh2lRvGEPlM8CjzHHmmn1O4/s320/tapeworm.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5634948479890772706" />

and Mr. Ruscha refers to it as:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 229px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBMw8nrV06RyvLiCJonpILytXycQo7n0P9mhkVhekDv7xvVZc_KXzTxRLhDwYM_VUv0u9ASSfvJU6LABe3Tf1Ep-o3SHu5vZZne29fJslJhQ8BQv-1g4MrsgeW8vbmvGM6UR4pgQzM_vs/s320/boy+scout+utility+modern.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5634948744888058738" />

and that's exactly what I was going for, so...perfect. He was very sweet and helpful and I always appreciate his excellent advice.)

I had no idea that designers had such strong feelings about fonts. I did, however, know that most people have grown to hate comic sans with a white hot passion. My good friend Kathrine Allen-Coleman had a fantastic, foul mouthed little movie about the poor fellow on her facebook feed today. Enjoy! Genna's calling it the 'triple crown'. Best of show in DesMoines, Juror's Award in Denver, and an Invitational award in Madison. The best thing about this is that we're now jury exempt for those shows next year. All of my festival friends out there will know how much this means. The jury process for these shows is so competitive that it's not at all unusual to have a great show in a city one year and then wait several years to get back in. So, yay!

Our other big news is that while we were away, a full studio opened up at the Flat Iron Studios building here in Greenville. Our good friend and artist Kent Ambler had graciously offered to split his space there with us so we already had plans to join the Flat Iron family, but we're even more excited that we'll now have a full gallery/studio space to play around with. We'll start our move in process tomorrow so I'll have lots more soon about our new partners, future plans, and the before/after of our new place.Signehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16286126315029653440noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5162976193267963716.post-30559468086220238332011-06-19T12:16:00.000-07:002011-06-19T12:33:59.604-07:00Engine # 6<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 238px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWUXWsspW9J0dZmUxaOt_BFgvhuInryxDQeF791m-o0NUihLf1DGogeZCj8Y8JRTYLNzVkM_3Dyd_gqu1wK_O8pvE49FNTaohYZGQaem0dZegC-zRLU8ZSkG_xZkDYHhtPeTuKuosu6kw/s320/steam_engine_36x48.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5620014972938293186" />
Every once in a blue moon, we make something that I step back and see and say "that's exactly what I had hoped to do". I finished a piece this week that was one of those. She's called 'Steam Engine' (oil on linen, 36" x 48"). Mine and Genna's layers married just right here and I think additionally I broke some new ground with my treatment of the foliage in the upper right quadrant. It's also a lot of intricate work that I think reads as easy and whole. Yay!

I just looked up how often a blue moon is and it says approximately once in 3 1/2 years. Wynn's gallery is a lovely, light-filled, second floor space on Main Street in downtown Annapolis. If you're in the area and looking for the show, you'll find it above the fine jewelry shop 'Casa Nova'.

Wynn did a beautiful job installing the show, giving each piece plenty of room to breathe. My favorite part of the show was the treatment of the small works. Due to the tiny amount of real estate we're used to having at festivals, I'm used to seeing my little babies in clusters of as many as 15 at a time. Wynn hung only 3 of the 6 or 7 small pieces we brought, giving each one plenty of elbow room. I loved the effect of this...making each little piece seem like a jewel.

We've been working with Wynn for over a year but this was our first time at the gallery. I was really taken with the stable of artists he has put together. Each artist seemed entirely different on first glance, yet there was a strong connection amongst them. It's hard to say exactly how to name this connection, but I think it has to do with technique and surface quality. Each artist (figurative, abstract, landscape) had a unique process for layering a lush, deep surface that hooks you into long-time-looking.

Building a strong 'artist family' at a gallery has to be in the top 3 most important jobs of a gallerist. Several clients at the show mentioned to us that they collect from almost all of Wynn's artists and that they trust Wynn to bring the goods every show. Check out his artist catalog online at www.wynnbonegallery.com.

Kudos, Wynn.

P.S. I loved his dog.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKzwtFKxUCXAbPkTFyZLQjBjNW6C8_mkCZ6Zo962utu6zFhT7MsSOOKkEqludOXSqu76pwHaYa5jh2jUBu3bXL8-XteNsij439BAeemRP0wjpfC8uOYKl6Xr1plkLqOmUOMy-KPhnCtR4/s320/IMG_2424.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5618146624572179394" />Signehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16286126315029653440noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5162976193267963716.post-21212894405062888442011-05-23T14:26:00.000-07:002011-05-23T14:56:50.345-07:00art closetI've made about 8 mid to large sized paintings in my new studio...'fondly' referred to as my 'art closet' due to it's massive size...and the jury is still out. The former owner of our house was an accountant who worked from home and the studio was her office. Counter tops wrap around the room on three walls leaving only about 4 or 5 feet of floor space in width. This means that I have to stand with my canvas parallel to the long side of the room and re-orient the canvas over and over to get out of the room or to step back and see what I'm up to.

If you're a painter, you understand how important the stepping back is. Its almost impossible to see what you're up to if you can't get 10-15 feet back from a large piece. I think if we rip out all of the counters and take off the studio door I'll be able to get enough distance by stepping out into the hall. That's all on my to-do list but might have to wait until winter!

Here's a peek at my art closet. We had such a great talk with Cindy that I forgive her for quoting me as saying that I'm a lazy painter. (I really did say that, I should have just prefaced it with 'this is off the record'! I say that to people constantly so it was just a matter of time before it became public record.)

The article is also about Artisphere, which was a great show for us...including a second place ribbon. Congrats to our good friend and art crush Lisa Norris for trumping us with best of show.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 226px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMpTc-iUDbIDrKjdaICwMSDIK5FCoD2Glvan8S8hecCVhFH9w_BJGUHx8H1uDcJhAOcLvVvbxfwDTV5SB6a0R-L28EzbaKZADm5Hbeiv2kGXiAyJVjjohEpd9_VDyH8L9tjKcv2cWMdK4/s320/greenvillejournal.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5607701032493240066" />

By Cindy Landrum
MAY 12, 2011

After Signe and Genna Grushovenko became partners in life, they really didn’t set out to become partners in art, too.
That’s something that began to happen gradually a couple of years into their marriage.

Because Signe Grushovenko was used to drawing with pastels on colored paper, she did not want to paint on a white canvas.

Genna, who was stretching and preparing the canvases that his wife would use, began underpainting. Soon, he began to turn the underpainting into more than just a bottom coat of color. They became abstract paintings in themselves.

He turned the canvases over to Signe, who uses her collection of a couple thousand vintage photographs ranging from old family photos to flea market and antique store finds as inspiration for the scene she paints over Genna’s colorful abstract canvases.

The Grushovenkos, who moved to Greenville in February, will join 10 other local artists chosen for artist row for this year’s Artisphere.

Artisphere, which is rated in the top 20 for art festivals in the United States, runs Friday through Sunday.

The 120 visual artists were chosen in a blind-juried competition from among a record 784 applicants. Half of the artists, including the Grushovenkos, are participating in the three-day festival are new to the festival.

“That’s exciting,” said Kerry Murphy, Artisphere’s executive director. “We’re excited that many artists want to come to Greenville.”

The artists represent a variety of mediums: ceramics, drawing, glass, jewelry, oil painting, acrylic painting, watercolors, photography, printmaking, sculpture and woodworking.

The artists aren’t the only things new.

The festival will feature artist demonstrations by local artists. Festivalgoers can watch a potter throw clay pots, an artist painting with wax and a blacksmith tying an Appalachian broom.

Gone are the food and beverage tickets, as cash will be accepted for the first time at all the food booths. The food vendors are using recyclable paper products, while beer and wine will be sold in recyclable cups.

Returning to the festival is crowd favorite, Brian Olsen. Olsen uses his fingertips, elbows and up to three paintbrushes at a time to create large paintings of pop icons during a single song.

Musical performances are highlighted by Sonia Leigh on Friday and Cory Chisel and the Wandering Sons on Saturday.

The Artists of the Upstate juried exhibition is hanging at Centre Stage.

Signe Grushovenko said while Genna’s part of the paintings got more complex, hers got simpler.

“I select what portion of his work to feature,” she said. “I am harnessing moments in his very free creative process.

Genna, who is from the Ukraine and completed compulsory service in the Soviet Army, said he has no preconceived notions of what his underpaintings will look like when he starts.

Sometimes, Signe tries to tell him what colors or patterns she needs.

“That’s the only thing we fight about anymore,” she said.

Genna said his painting is a “jazz-like process.” “Sometimes, it’s hard to control,” he said. “Any restriction on my creativity does not serve me well. It’s a very fluid and spontaneous process.”

Sometimes the process creates an underpainting that Signe doesn’t originally think she can use.

“It pushes her to make some difficult decisions,” he said.

Genna said it’s difficult to duplicate the process because he paints outside and weather conditions can affect his results because he uses very thin paints.

“The unpredictability is part of the fun for me,” he said.

Signe said she is drawn to vintage photographs because of the patterns created by the groups of people, including the shapes between them and the repetition of arms and legs.

“Signe selects a photograph for a feeling,” he said.

Signe’s first painting from a vintage photograph used a picture of her great grandparents.

“I felt a real resonance with black and white photos,” she said. “They give me freedom of color.”

She doesn’t base many of her paintings on family photographs anymore.

“Some of the photographs I use once and some I go back to over and over,” she said.

She likes early century photos because “people made such great shapes in their clothes.”

Signe, like Genna, doesn’t know exactly where she’s headed when she begins a painting. But she knows when it’s finished.

“I’m kind of a lazy painter. I like to be done,” she said. “It’s easy to overpaint.”

The Grushovenkos are looking forward to their first art show in their new hometown.

The move first came up when a pair of very close friends moved to Spartanburg. There was nothing left to keep the Grushovenkos in LaGrange, Ga.

The first time they came to Greenville – for Open Studios – they were convinced to move.

“We were thinking it would be a long process, but we were here in within three months,” she said.

Although the move added some travel time to their outdoor art show circuit which is usually around a dozen art shows around the country, the move has been a good one, Signe said.

“Coming from a town where we were the only full-time artists in town to here, where there is a talented group of artists who were very welcoming, I was blown away,” she said.Signehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16286126315029653440noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5162976193267963716.post-24189432961825333392011-05-08T18:06:00.000-07:002011-05-08T18:49:25.824-07:00Art & Light Installation<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsAuV1UngMNKaqoioB4jdU_VDNtFXGMKIdn8DFubNjNQT0jV9d2Pqw7HdE0CQ5qqaP3AQoTnCVraZXIxOpay0X9Yyr2netD0zj4Ui4OG8_7o-WdaTocZaxRva8DZIk5Dv4N8fPf2FQlxI/s320/art-n-light-corner2.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5604524939897109090" />
We've been busy beavers since my last post (two months ago...embarrassing). Two trips to Texas, one to Kansas City, and a bunch of other stuff I can't remember right now. The one bit of doin' I'm most excited to report is that we've just opened our first exhibition here in our new hometown of Greenville SC.

I was in Art & Light the first time last November when Genna and I were just considering our move. I was so impressed with the quality of the artists and the clever, current style of the displays that I figured Greenville couldn't be half bad! Gallerist and designer Theresa Roche presents her artist's works alongside carefully chosen mid century furniture and lighting. She has an awesome eye and a great sense of humor (uber important to good design).

So, we were incredibly honored that our G'ville coming out party took place at Art & Light. Theresa visited our studio a few weeks before the opening to preview the work in order to chose furniture and accessories as appropriate accompaniments. The result is one of my favorite installations of our work ever. My favorite part is the vignette in the rear of the gallery featuring our 'Secondary Class Portraits I & II' (24" x 72" each panel) and 'Pre Poker' hanging above the 100" 60's Henredon sofa. The fabric on the sofa is original and converses brilliantly with the underpainting in the class portrait.

If you're in the area in May, go by and check it out. Also on site are our good friends Joey Bradley and Kent Ambler and many other fantastic local artists. I've been obsessed with painting pants for years now and I'm thinking that the swagger factor is actually the underlying interest there. Here are my newest boys:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg77wMbYPhui1RzIjevfbbK7eYdMV4i3f8sHzaA-BQAYPehTJmGXDCfOtXdF99NKsULe_P8yaHQHF3XzAfQ3xAT3K4TCRa56EQWdGZ2Mr3xj14y2Vuj2xi2fPqWrHpbjPjlvbs6h85lyXk/s320/power_play_48x36.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5581140609787912114" />
"Power Play", 48" x 36" oil on linen (farm house swagger)

And stepping back through the last few projects:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 158px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgT3vHMhekh4lo0gPpEYyqUN6-PqW1WxXrNW_zIzJ65GHm1dBWHKP4miRRjPD7Uy1SqIUFYk_a6CdNam7Nt_aUgWMrVj_i1ywGL4QV0PT38QRvM5UdA2z-HrMIuO0ppjYNJJyobAqgaYPI/s320/proud_owner_24x48.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5581140489364939154" />
"Prowd Owner", 24" x 48" oil on linen (20's swagger)

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 309px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj13514O6a2tS3SAHkp01agRToSlHKc103gKrlKj6Kp7zkV7U1TaJ07YEYG7-lPvoe07lT_KnU8U7Vrsw8xpcoJiMTJq674oZ1NcREg9Q_70sPkNPYgKhh43ream4hw5HYX2o6ckCeEkE4/s320/sunday_drive_trio_36x36.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5581140381382571410" />
"Sunday Drivers", 36" square oil on linen (cruising swagger)

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyFSL63448MG4FuAsZNGncUI64aSBa6E6g4hgFdIveW8YGxqPDUUFTm44ng3qhy9DI6_i1xLjtQKzCYGr6tH08uryPpKl_WimATXfkubdb56wfEIOv6iT5ZFDs9zBxvJbJmeJRNHuObKQ/s320/buff_beachgoers_40x30.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5581141701386741042" />
"Buff Beachgoers", 40" x 30" oil on linen (pantsless swagger)

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPPBbQ33DUgXoJnqfjmzCM1emKQKyXQZATDkZ21I2F-XrnBdfrMhdZVI26YqQc7o4TEPQXPbsy5fwYgBzsY5NFi-qCIbvu8IZlYCh88vNGBLqNbDBqFRWGnMQOTxl5wNDRaLQ_JVclOP8/s320/swaggering_foursome_30x40.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5581140252922108674" />
"Swaggering Foursome", 30" x 40" oil on linen (slow-mo walk swagger)

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 239px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUcRWNrNrECJztkqYQ75_0DB7S1DFlGQ_hTIT_ox8PzGekBoKt1YeAukzap2q2_RGgX_Cwb8shyex5EefBeU9xkJs7ORyGpzKqs9NIjKgINdsXO3D6VBxXiANL8JB5XvhkgqXueRiNz9o/s320/plain_white_tee_36x48_2011.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5581141572971326226" />
& "Plain White Tee", 36" x 48" oil on linen (Rebel Without a Cause swagger)

Sexy, yah?!Signehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16286126315029653440noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5162976193267963716.post-2400497858889728932011-02-12T08:23:00.001-08:002011-02-12T09:01:44.124-08:00'peek-a-boo'About a year ago, my good friend and fellow artist Cora Waterhouse turned me onto to Robert Genn's twice weekly email letter. Mr. Genn is a brilliant painter and writer who consistently offers thought provoking insights on all topics art related...the craft of painting, sources of inspiration, the natural world, work habits, art book reviews, brain science, art world politics, etc., etc. I read the twice weekly letter religiously and it has ALWAYS been worth my time.

The second letter of this past week was fantastic and shed light on something that I've always felt to be true about my own work but couldn't explain why. This is the idea of 'equivocation' or intentional ambiguity. There is a magic balance in abstract/representational painting where you reach a point that something is 'just enough'. Stepping over that line for me can absolutely ruin a piece; connect too many dots and the picture disappears. Here's what Robert had to say:

"A few minutes ago I was watching a young couple staring at a huge abstract painting in a commercial art gallery. The painting was mysterious, dark, tentative--with perhaps, only perhaps, the whisper of a female figure. Previously, when I'd daringly checked out its very high price, a gallerista swept by and assured me, "We sell a lot of this man's work."

Now I'm sitting on a bench eating coconut ice cream while keeping abreast of brain science on my iPad. V.S. Ramachandran is a professor of neuroscience and psychology at the University of California, San Diego. Looking into various brains, including the brains of people who look at art, he's come to the conclusion that things are better when they are less visible. He calls it "The Peekaboo Principle." In his research, it seems that girls in scanty clothing are more appealing to the average straight male than girls in the buff. To be fair, these findings have been challenged by every frat house west of the Pecos.

According to Ramachandran, concealment works because we are hardwired to solve puzzles. People get turned on by problem solving.

Further, curiosity is more arousing than the part where you get the message. This is how Ramachandran explains the popularity of abstract art. It seems our tiny perfect brains are forever on the lookout for wizardry. He thinks we are hardwired for what he calls "ultranormal stimuli." Yep, it's a bit like religion--many people crave the possibilities of the transcendent, the divine, the paranormal."

To subscribe to Robert Genn's free twice weekly letter, follow this link. It should get you to the current letter, then there's a 'subscribe' button towards the top. You won't be sorry!Signehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16286126315029653440noreply@blogger.com0
